August 2025 highlights


The drake RING-NECKED DUCK continued to be seen at Ogston Reservoir to the 28th. Two BLACK-NECKED GREBE were at Carsington Water on the 10th, with a WHITE STORK (of unknown origin) at Minninglow Hill also on the 10th. The RUDDY SHELDUCK continued at Foremark Reservoir. RED-CRESTED POCHARD were at Carsington Water with a single bird there all month, but four females/juveniles on the 28th, which are assumed to be migrants. Melbourne Pool, Wingerworth and Mercia Marina continued to host a single bird each with the latter bird commuting to Willington Wetlands occasionally.
Two LITTLE STINT were found at Ogston Reservoir on the 20th and remained into the evening, but not the next day. A GREY PLOVER was at Carsington Water on the 13th and a juvenile WOOD SANDPIPER was located on the 27th to the month end. Another WOOD SANDPIPER was at Middleton Moor Lagoons from the 18th to the 21st. A SANDWICH TERN graced Carsington Water on the 6th and a SHORT-EARED OWL was seen on a couple of days during the month at Common Farm NR.
