CATTLE EGRETS were seen at Erewash Meadows from10th-11th with another at Carsington Water from 29th 30th. Dave Wragg had a great surprise on the 28th, when he had an apparent GREAT SKUA fly over his garden in Alfreton! The RUDDY SHELDUCK pair continued to put in an appearance at Barrow GP, being present throughout the month. Barrow GP also provided a female RED-CRESTED POCHARD on the 4th, with an eclipse male at Carsington Water from the 17th to the month end.
GREAT WHITE EGRETS were seen in multiples within the Trent Valley all month. They were also seen at Bennerley Marsh (three on the 29th), at Carr Vale NR on the 1st (one south at 08:35), the 12th, the 19th (one through north at 09:30), the 29th (when two were present), and the 31st (one reported). Other sightings were at Carsington Water (7th and 29th), Hardwick Park (on the 3rd), Ogston Reservoir (8th and 29th), and Wyver Lane (one from 13th-28th).
The SPOONBILL remained at Ogston Reservoir until the 15th, the longest staying that Derbyshire has seen. Two juvenile BLACK-NECKED GREBE were at Ogston Reservoir on the 1st.
Scarce birds this month included up to three BARNACLE GEESE at Carsington Water all month, plus three more at Straw's Bridge. A juvenile/eclipse GARGANEY was at Willington GP from the 16th, with a juvenile at Carr Vale NR from the 21st to the month end, and another at Carsington Water on the 24th. Two KNOT were found on the 18th and one remained for the next few days. Continuing the run of waders a WOOD SANDPIPER was seen at Carr Vale NR on the 20th, followed by another (or maybe the same?) at Wyver Lane, which stayed until the 21st. SANDWICH TERNS graced Carsington Water with three on the 17th, but a surprise find was of one fishing on the Trent and Mersey canal at Massey’s Bridge on the 8th, seen with 'Commons'.
STATS In total 21046 records were received of 175 different species (including the escapes). These records covered 465 sites from 429 different grid squares. Many thanks to the 324 people that sent in their records.
